About Nigerian Prison Service

The Nigerian Correctional Service which was formerly known as the Nigerian Prison Service until August 2019 is a Nigerian government agency that operates the correctional (prison) facilities across the country.

Charged with the responsibility of taking charge of those legally detained, identifying their behavior causes, and retraining them, the National Prison Service is fully empowered by the 1972 Decree No.9 as amended in 2004 CAP P29 laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in the 2019 Nigerian Correctional Services Act.

The Nigerian Prison Service has its headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and is headed by the Controller-General of Prison Service, Ja’afaru Ahmed. He was installed as the head in 2016 by the President, Muhammadu Buhari and is directly responsible to the Minister of Interior and the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration, and Prison Services Board.

The Nigerian Prison Service which came to reality in 1968 after the abolishment of the former Native Authority Prisons can, today, boast of about 240 prisons among which are 138 main prisons (for convicts), 85 satellite facilities, 14 farm centers, and 3 Borstal Institutions.

Most importantly, the Nigerian Prison Service (Nigerian Correctional Service) has just one vision which is to establish a credible prison service.

This the service will do through efficient penal practices that a long-lasting change in the attitudes, behaviors, values of convicts.
This is to ensure these convicts enjoy a successful reintegration into society.

What are the functions of the Nigerian Prison Service?

The Nigerian Prisons Service derives its operational powers fully from the CAP P29 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. This law empowers the Nigerian Prison Service to carry out the following functions below.

  1. To take all those certified to be so kept by courts of competent jurisdiction into lawful custody.
  2. To produce suspects in courts as and when due for an appearance.
  3. To identify the causes of convicts’ anti-social dispositions.
  4. To set in motion mechanisms for convicts treatment and training for eventual reintegration into society as normal law-abiding citizens on discharge.
  5. To establish and administer Prisons Farms and Industries for the purpose of retraining convicts and in the process generate revenue for the Federal government.

What is the strength of the Nigerian Prison Service?

Like every other civil service, the Nigerian Prison Service strength lies in its staff numbers. Today, the Nigerian Prison Service boasts of over 28,500 officers with many other recruits still undergoing training.

What is the Primary Role of the Nigerian Prison Service?

The primary role of the Nigerian Prison Service, NPS is embedded in its mission statement which is “to promote public protection by providing assistance for offenders in their reformation and rehabilitation under safe, secure, and humane conditions in accordance with the universally accepted standard and to facilitate their social reintegration into the society.”

The NPS specific functions include the following below;

  1. To take custody of suspects or convicts legally detained.
  2. To identify the causes of convicts behaviors.

Those with their master’s degree from any university are eligible to apply for this position.

Architecture, Humanities, Lab. Sciences, Engineering, Radiology, Social Sciences etc.

  1. Assistant Superintendent of Prisons II (ASP.II), CONPASS 08

Requirements:

Those with B.Sc. in the following discipline are eligible to apply for this position.

Public Health, Psychology, Humanities, Social Sciences, Estate/Town Planning, Food Sciences, Social Works, etc.

(2) CATEGORY B: Inspectorate Cadre: –

The information here is all about Inspectorate Cadre Recruitment in the Nigerian Prisons Service Ongoing Recruitment.

You will learn all it takes to apply and be successfully shortlisted if you are applying for Inspectorate cadre.

There are about 3 available positions in this category. They are SIP, IP, and AIP, you will get to know about the requirements for all the positions in this category.

Applicants must have graduated from the following discipline: Estate Management, Town Planning, Public Health, Food Sciences, Social Works, etc.

Inspector of Prisons (IP) Nursing, CONHESS 06.

This position is for nurses, registered midwives. To apply for this position, you must meet the following requirements.

Requirements:

Applicants must be Registered Nurses (RN), Registered Midwives (RM)

Or they must be Registered Nurses/Midwives (RNM)

Applicants must have obtained their certificate from recognized institutions

Assistant Inspector of Prisons (AIP) CONPASS 06.

Applicants must be holders of OND/NCE Obtained from recognized institutions.

Any discipline can apply for this position since none was specified by the Nigerian Prisons Service Recruitment Authority.

(3) CATEGORY C: Assistant Cadre:-

Assistant Cadre category is for drivers, Mechanics, Plumbers, Carpenters, Masons, and electricians.

Prisons Assistant I (PAI) CONPASS 05

Requirements:

Applicants who wish to apply for this position must meet the following requirements

Must have your WAEC or NECO Certificate

GCE Ordinary Level will also be accepted

Must have a minimum of Five (5) credits in not more than two (2) sittings in their SSCE Result including English and Mathematics or Trade Test Grade 1

Must be interested in the following areas

(Artisans, Motor drivers, Mechanics, Auto Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Masons, etc.)

Prisons Assistant II (PAII) CONPASS 04

Applicants who wish to apply for this position must meet the following requirements

Must have your WAEC or NECO Certificate

GCE Ordinary Level will also be accepted

Must have a minimum of Five (5) credits including English or Trade Test Grade II and in not more than two (2) sittings.

Must be interested in the following areas

(Artisans, Motor drivers, Mechanics, Auto Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Masons, etc.)

Prison Assistant III (PA.III) CONPASS 03.

Interested applicants for this position must meet the following requirements

  1. Have their GCE, SSCE/NECO Result or its equivalents
  2. Minimum of three (3) credits in not more than Two (2) sittings, which should include at least English or Mathematics or Trade Test Grade III.
  3. Must be interested in Artisans, Motor drivers, Mechanics, Auto Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Masons, etc.

General Requirements for Nigerian Prisons Service Recruitments 2020

Candidates who wish to apply for the Nigeria Prisons Service Recruitment exercise must meet the following conditions:

  • Must be a Nigerian citizen by birth with no criminal record.
  • Must have WASSCE/GCE/NECO/NABTEB with Credits in not less than three (3) subjects including English
  • A minimum of B.Sc/H.N.D/ or ND degree from a reputable institution
  • Must have N.Y.S.C discharge certificate or exemption letter
  • Age requirements: Candidates must be between 22-35 years old.
  • Must be medically, physically and psychologically fit
  • Must be of good character, have the ability to work under pressure
  • Not less than 1.7m in height for male and 1.64m for female
  • Candidates with the following disabilities should not apply:
  • Flat foot;
  • Sight problem;

The Nigeria Prison Service ranks and salary has been much of debate for some time. Although, the new salary scale of Nigeria custom officers has increased some years ago alongside the salaries for public servants by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2007.

The Nigerian Prisons Service is a government agency of Nigeria which operates prisons. The agency is headquartered in Abuja, and it is under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior and the Civil Defence Immigration and Prisons Board.

The new salary structure for Para-military personnel is known as the Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), which sees an increase in basic salary and allowances for Nigerian Prison officers and all Para-military organizations. This is different from the Nigerian army salary, Air force, and the Navy.

1). The average salary of Nigerian customs service workers – N800,000-N1,000,000 annually (N50,000 monthly).

2). The highest salary is received by the Controller-General of Prison Service, the second-highest goes to the Deputy Controller Generals and Assistant Generals.

4). It was stated that salary grade level 07 is automatically moved to salary grade level 08, so this means that Nigeria prison officers’ salaries are growing.
